The Future of Life Institute (FLI)
The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is an independent non-profit that works to reduce extreme risks from transformative technologies, as well as steer the development and use of these technologies to benefit life.
FLI’s recent focus has been on reducing near and long-term threats from artificial intelligence but we also work in the nuclear, climate and biotechnology spheres. Our work primarily consists of grantmaking, educational outreach, and policy advocacy in the United States, European Union, and United Nations. We also host events and run contests.
The Future of Life Institute’s policy positions are determined by its five board members, based on the latest academic research and input from conferences and consultations. For an example, please see this page on the process behind the Asilomar AI principles, which have been backed by over 1700 artificial intelligence and robotics researchers.
