Beneficial AGI 2019
We again brought together an amazing group of AI researchers from academia and industry, as well as thought leaders in economics, law, policy, ethics, and philosophy for five days dedicated to beneficial AI. We hosted a two-day technical workshop to look more deeply at how we can create beneficial AGI, and we followed that with a 2.5-day conference, in which people from a broader AI background considered the opportunities and challenges related to the future of AGI and steps we can take today to move toward an even better future.
The conference focused on discussions about where we want to steer the future of humanity, some of the biggest technical safety challenges ahead of us, and how society can work together to develop a better future. Speakers and participants included Stuart Russell, Allan Dafoe, Brian Tse, Francesca Rossi, Helen Toner, Carla Gomes, Joshua Greene, Nick Bostrom, Amanda Askell, Gillian Hadfield, Ried Hoffman, James Manyika, Erik Brynjolfsson, and many more.
Find the full schedule and list of speakers here. We’ll continue to add videos and PDFs to the page as those are finalized and approved.

FLI Podcast — AI Breakthroughs and Challenges in 2018 with David Krueger and Roman Yampolskiy
Roman and David shared their lists of 2018’s most promising AI advances, as well as their thoughts on some major ethical questions and safety concerns. They also discussed media coverage of AI research, why talking about “breakthroughs” can be misleading—and why there may have been more progress in the past year than it seems.
Cooperative Inverse Reinforcement Learning with Dylan Hadfield-Menell is the eighth podcast in the AI Alignment Podcast series, hosted by Lucas Perry and was recorded at the Beneficial AGI 2018 conference in Puerto Rico. For those of you that are new, this series covers and explores the AI alignment problem across a large variety of domains, reflecting the fundamentally interdisciplinary nature of AI alignment.
While AI development inspires much discussion among members of the scientific community, public opinion on the subject has remained relatively unknown. Artificial Intelligence: American Attitudes and Trends, a report published earlier in January by the Center for the Governance of AI, explores this question. This month Ariel was joined by Baobao Zhang, lead author of the report, to discuss their findings.
