Over the past decade, both Republican and Democratic administrations have recognized the need for action on AI, releasing a series of Executive Orders to address the changing technological landscape. These include:

    • Executive Order 13859 on "Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence";
    • Executive Order 13960 on "Promoting the Use of Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence in the Federal Government";
    • Executive Order 13873 on "Securing the Information and Communications Technology and Services Supply Chain," and;
    • Executive Order 14110 on "Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence," (rescinded on January 20, 2025 by Executive Order 14148);
    • Executive Order 14141 on "Advancing United States Leadership in Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure";
    • Executive Order 14144 on "Strengthening and Promoting Innovation in the Nation's Cybersecurity";
    • Executive Order 14179 on "Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence;"
    • Executive Order 14213 on "Establishing the National Energy Dominance Council."

To contribute to this effort, the Future of Life Institute has provided formal input through responses to Requests for Comments and Information to the federal government. We provide technical and policy expertise on a wide range of issues including hardware governance, standard setting and protection of critical infrastructure.

You can find our formal responses to each Request below. We engage with the Executive branch through these and other means to ensure that artificial intelligence abides by the same safety guarantees that we have rightfully come to expect in other sectors such as in medicine development or aviation.

Recommendations for the U.S. AI Action Plan

The Future of Life Institute proposal for President Trump’s AI Action Plan. Our recommendations aim to protect the presidency from AI loss-of-control, promote the development of AI systems free from ideological or social agendas, protect American workers from job loss and replacement, and more.

Perspectives of Traditional Religions on Positive AI Futures

Most of the global population participates in a traditional religion. Yet the perspectives of these religions are largely absent from strategic AI discussions. This initiative aims to support religious groups to voice their faith-specific concerns and hopes for a world with AI, and work with them to resist the harms and realise the benefits.
