Over the past decade, both Republican and Democratic administrations have recognized the need for action on AI, releasing a series of Executive Orders to address the changing technological landscape. These include:

These Executive Orders emphasize "the highest urgency on governing the development and use of AI safely and responsibly," tasking agencies and departments across the Executive branch as part of a coordinated, Federal Government-wide approach.

To contribute to this effort, the Future of Life Institute has provided formal input through responses to an array of Requests for Comments and Information to agencies across the federal government. We have provided technical and policy expertise on a wide range of issues including export controls, hardware governance, standard setting, procurement, protection of critical infrastructure, international development and risk management.

You can find our formal responses to each Request below. We will continue to engage with the Executive branch through these and other means to facilitate effective government action to ensure the safe, secure and responsible development of artificial intelligence.
