The Bureau investigates and challenges anticompetitive mergers, monopolistic conduct, and other practices that restrain trade. It pursues legal action in federal court or before FTC administrative law judges. The Bureau also advises policymakers on competition issues and collaborates with foreign agencies.

The Bureau investigates and challenges anticompetitive mergers, monopolistic conduct, and other practices that restrain trade. It pursues legal action in federal court or before FTC administrative law judges. The Bureau also advises policymakers on competition issues and collaborates with foreign agencies.
While the Bureau of Competition handles civil antitrust enforcement, it works in consultation with the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, which is responsible for criminal antitrust cases.
The Technology Enforcement division of the FTC investigates anticompetitive conduct in digital markets, including online platforms, digital advertising, and AI. It handles cases involving consummated acquisitions and collaborates with other agency departments on policy issues.
Authority
The Federal Trade Commission Act and the Clayton Act grant the FTC authority to enforce antitrust laws which is carried out through the Bureau of Competition.
