Chief AI Officer (CAIO)
The Chief AI officer will promote AI innovation and responsible AI use across the Department, develops internal policies regarding AI use in partnership with DHS offices and components, and coordinate AI-related efforts on behalf of the Secretary. The CIO role sits under the Management Directorate in the Office of the Chief Information Office.

Authority
Through authority granted by Executive Order 14110, The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) requires federal agencies to designate Chief AI Officers. These officers are directed to coordinate their efforts across the Federal Government and implement the OMB’s guidance.
Budget
The FY 2025 Management Directorate Budget established a new office called the Office of the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer under the Office of the Chief Information Officer. The budget allocation for this new office will include the support of the AI Task Force. this office will enable the responsible use of AI across DHS.
