FLI President on the White House Executive Order

Contents
Statement from Anthony Aguirre, President and CEO of the Future of Life Institute, in response to the White House Executive Order establishing an AI working group:
“This is an important step in the right direction. President Trump is treating frontier AI for what it actually is: a technology powerful enough to threaten our national security, our economy, and the stability of our world. The White House has now directed the federal government to start addressing this threat.
‘Just trust the companies’ has never been a viable policy. A single system like Mythos can uncover vulnerabilities that have eluded cybersecurity experts for decades. The Government must be able to evaluate national security risks posed by these systems before they are released.
Voluntary frameworks are not enough, however. We need a mandatory government pre-deployment review process for the most powerful AI systems, allowing the government to block the release of systems that pose an unacceptable national security risk.
We encourage President Trump to push further in this direction. The technology is advancing ever faster, and we need strong leadership, now more than ever, to keep Americans safe.”
