The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is this year’s winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded on December 10, 2017. This comes as no surprise to the policy wonks who have been keeping up with ICAN’s historic efforts that culminated this summer with a United Nations treaty to outlaw nuclear weapons once and for all. But for everyone else, nuclear weapons only recently came back on the radar as concerns about friction between North Korea and Washington made headlines. So why are nuclear weapons still a big deal and what’s so amazing about what ICAN accomplished?
